Advanced X-ray Image Analysis Courses:

For Baggage, Cargo or Mail Center Screening

Course Description:  This hands-on, intensive training program is designed to train security personnel responsible for operation of x-ray screening systems on advanced techniques for identifying threat objects and individuals. The training is based on 2 principles: 1) the better an operator understands the technology behind the equipment, the better they will understand it’s operation and limitations and 2) hands-on scenario training using the screening equipment and simulated-threat training aids ensures greater skill transfer and provides opportunities to practice and refine procedures for threat situations. Because the scenario portion of the training places the students in simulated threat situations that they most likely have never encountered before, it can be a physically and mentally challenging experience. This course improves confidence, reduces complacency, and emphasizes individual skills, team work and communication.

The course is presented in 2 sections: the first half is classroom-based and includes a radiation safety overview, a technology overview of x-ray screening equipment, introduction of advanced techniques in reading x-ray images, behavior recognition techniques, and behavior-based interventions to ensure improved skill transfer. The second half is the hands-on scenarios, which can be tailored to be specific for an organization’s procedures and anticipated threats. The students will be required to pass a written test with a passing score to achieve certification (certification is valid for 1 year). All training aids used in the Course are developed and manufactured by Global Security Professionals and are x-ray equivalent to real threat items. Training aids include weapons and devices that simulate nuclear, biological, chemical and explosive threats.

Course Length:  8 hours

Course Topics:

  • Radiation Safety
  • Technology overview of x-ray systems
  • Advanced image analysis techniques for reviewing x-ray images
  • Overview of  types of bags/parcels/conveyances/containers and techniques for placement and handling
  • Behavior recognition techniques overview and exercise
  • Review of procedures for threat situations
  • Scenarios

Course Prerequisites

This course is specifically designed for security specialists to improve their skills in point of entry security locations using various types of detection equipment. It is appropriate as either an entry level course for new security professionals or for experienced screeners. The course material covered is taught at a level that assumes the student has had basic operator skills training on x-ray screening systems. It is also important that all students have experience working in radiation areas and training in radiation safety is recommended.
